Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a perennial succulent plant. This plant grows in tropical and subtropical regions. The leaves grow directly from the ground and the older leaves have a short, thick stem.

The leaves are composed of three layers:

1. an external protective layer.
2. a fibrous  layer,  just  beneath  the  external layer; this fibrous layer contains a bitter material that protects the plant.
3. a gelatinous core, where water material is stored; this water is the actual active material that is used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.
