What is Glycolic Acid?
Glycolic acid is one of a group of acids known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). Alpha Hydroxy Acids can be found natural is sugar cane, milk and fruit. The Glycolic acid that comes from sugar cane is considered the smallest of the AHAs group and will penetrate to the deeper layers of skin.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) are a group of organic acids that have recently become popular in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions. Several of those acids are derived from fruits, so they are often referred to as “fruit acids”. For example, glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane, citric acid from citrus fruits, and malic acid from apples.
The exact mechanism of action of AHA's is not completely understood. However, it appears that the acids exert specific, separate effects on the epidermis and the dermis. In the epidermis, the effect is at the level of the stratum. AHA's causes sticky cells to become loose, allowing them to shed. This effect is different than that of other acids, which offer a dissolving effect on the most superficial cells of the stratum corneum.
Glycolic acid /AHA’s can help in thickening of the dermis which is an increase in the collagen and glycosaminoglycan in the dermis, this increase in dermal volume reduces depth of wrinkles and scars.
Glycolic acid /AHA’s can also help in reducing skin blemishes, acne breakouts, even out skin tone and giving you an amazing glowing skin.
