What Is Acne? Acne is a skin condition that affects the skin, specifically the oil glands. The glands are small holes (holes) in the skin that connect to the oil glands under the skin. Oil glands produce oily materials that are named sebum. The skin pores connect the oil glands with hair follicles through canals. The oil inside hair follicles moves dead skin cells to the skin's surface. When sebum, hair, and dead skin cells stay in the pores, bacteria in the pores may infect the area, which causes swelling that is known as acne or zit.
What Causes Acne? Acne is caused by infection and blockage of the skin's oil glands. Bacteria accumulation and excessive sebum secretion occur. Skin with clogged pores cannot naturally secrete excess oil, which causes the pores to form a pump on the skin surface (called acne).
